Joni Jurmo’s time with the Calgary Flames has officially come to an end.
The 23-year-old defenceman joined the Flames organization during the 2023-24 season in a trade that saw him, Andrei Kuzmenko, Hunter Bruzstewicz, and multiple picks head to Calgary from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Elias Lindholm.
While Brzustewicz was seen as the big get for the Flames, there was some excitement about Jurmo, whom the Canucks selected in the third round of the 2020 draft.
The 2024-25 season saw Jurmo make the transition to professional hockey in North America after spending several years in Finland. It didn’t go as hoped, however, as he struggled to get into the lineup for the Calgary Wranglers and wound up spending some time in the ECHL.
Jurmo was under contract with the Flames for one more season, but that is no longer the case, as it was confirmed this morning that he has been placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his deal.

This is a disappointing outcome, as Jurmo did have some intriguing intangibles, perhaps most notably his 6-foot-5, 205-pound frame. While he was able to produce some solid offensive numbers in his brief ECHL stint, however, he couldn’t replicate that with the Wranglers, as he was held pointless through 17 outings.
This move was likely made in part due to the large number of prospects the Flames have on the back end. It likely would have resulted in him playing in the ECHL once again in 2025-26. Instead, he has a chance to head elsewhere, perhaps back to Finland, to continue his hockey career.
