Man dies after shooting himself near Burnaby Lake

Jul 13 2017, 7:51 am

A man died after shooting himself near Burnaby Lake on Wednesday afternoon.

In a release, RCMP said they received reports at 12:50 am that a man had left his home and “intended to harm himself”.

An investigation began and it was determined the man was in an area near Burnaby Lake Regional Park.

Later in the day, at 2:27 pm, officers found who they believed to be the man they were looking for, holding a firearm.

“Police engaged the man verbally, at which point the man shot himself,” the release said.

The scene has been cordoned off as part of the investigation.

The BC Coroners Services has been notified.

Because police were at the scene of the incident, the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has also been notified and are now conducting an investigation to see if there is any link between police action or inaction and the man’s death.

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please call the 24/7 BC Crisis Centre at 1-800-784-2433 for help.
