There’s no shortage of incredible, family-owned restaurants in and around Vancouver, but one that needs an extra special mention is Nana’s Bakery.

This Eastern European restaurant in the heart of Burnaby is the epitome of a hidden gem. Nana’s Bakery is well-known in the neighbourhood and has a steady flow of visitors and locals who pop into the shop to experience delicious, authentic European cuisine. The venue is a bakery and mini-market in one, and it’s very reasonably priced.

On the outside, Nana’s blends in with its surroundings: a quaint white brick building in the heart of Burnaby. Stepping inside the little bakery, however, you’ll realize it’s anything but ordinary.

Guests can sit and browse through traditional Turkish, Serbian, and Croatian cookbooks while they wait for their food in the diner-style seating area. In the market on the far side of the restaurant, patrons will find traditional recipe staples, simple syrups, and delightful European sweets.

Both the market and the bakery are chock full of delicious foods and drinks that make you feel right at home — even if it’s food your own nana never made. But beyond this, the atmosphere at Nana’s is truly unique. The staff are so friendly, and clearly know their regular customers well; they go above and beyond with their service.

When we asked the front-of-house staff what they recommend, they replied that newcomers need to order Nana’s most popular dish: Chevaps. Think minced beef and grilled onion served on a pita with sour cream or vegetable sauce. Spoiler alert: it’s delicious. Imagine a big perogy. Yum!

Don’t leave without trying some potato-stuffed pastries, though; they’re priced at only $2, but make you feel like a million bucks.

Of course, you can’t visit a bakery without getting dessert. Nana’s has a variety of options, but their most popular items are their Nutella pita and baklava. There’s nothing like pastries made with love, just like Nana used to make.

The desserts are so tasty that you probably won’t be able to resist grabbing some for the road, too. Nana’s sells packages of homemade cookies that are perfect for parties, visiting family, or just snacking on when you’re watching Netflix.
