Burnaby Hospital COVID-19 outbreak grows to 103 cases

A total of 103 patients and staff at Burnaby Hospital have tested positive for COVID-19 in an outbreak that continues to swell.

Ten people have died from their infections so far, Fraser Health said in an update Wednesday evening. Patient infections account for 60 of the cases, and 43 staff have been infected too.

Health officials have previously said that a fire in the hospital contributed to spread because patients needed to be moved swiftly to get to safety. Fraser Health said Wednesday that restoration work from the fire has been completed.

The hospital is accepting regular admissions through its emergency department again, and infection control measures are in place to stem the spread of COVID-19.

“We continue to actively address the outbreak at the site, and are testing all patients admitted through the Emergency Department and all surgical patients to minimize the risk of additional transmission,” the health authority said.
