The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide: Burdock & Co.

Jun 2 2016, 12:53 am

We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re at Main Street’s Burdock & Co.

With both traditional and inventive fare, indulge your love of brunch this weekend at Mount Pleasant’s Burdock & Co.

Located on Main Street at the corner of East 11th Avenue, Burdock & Co. ups the ante on standard brunch by offering locally-sourced organic food, seasonally-focused dishes and tasty vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free plates.

Following owner and chef Andrea Carlson’s well-established passion for urban agriculture and farm to table cooking, Burdock & Co. guarantees that only the very best arrives at the table, whether sourced from one of Vancouver’s nearby farms or a downtown urban garden.

Brunch goers visiting Burdock & Co., can therefore expect super fresh produce that has been thoughtfully prepared and expertly cooked. Apart from a few usual suspects Burdock & Co. offers its patrons a different take on brunch classics and has crafted a menu that is full of unique dishes, flavourfully comforting meals and complementary food pairings.

Indeed, Burdock & Co.’s menu allows diners to choose from variety of interesting and tempting plates like heirloom squash dumplings ($15), smoked chili broth ramen ($14), Burdock fried chicken with kimchi ($16), poached eggs on salt cod polenta, ($14) and chili fried eggs on toast, with avocado and watercress ($14).

No matter what dish is ordered, the freshness of the ingredients is evident with each bite taken.

Aside from their main sized brunch dishes Burdock & Co. also offers a range of smaller plates, which are ideal for sharing or simply adding onto a meal and include: cabbage salad with pumpkin seed vinaigrette ($9), German butter potatoes with pickled garlic and marjoram ($6), shave heirloom carrot salad ($9) and grilled maple fennel bacon ($6).

The restaurant’s small plates are just as enticing as the larger ones and must not be overlooked. The soft, tender, thickly cut slices of grilled bacon are generously glazed and reason enough to get out of bed in the morning, as are the restaurant’s morning mimosas!

Even though the restaurant is not overly huge – about 30 or so diners can fit comfortably around the communal and individual tables – the team at Burdock & Co. have certainly created a space that is relaxed and cozy, making it the perfect place to enjoy brunch on a cold, rainy morning.

Delightfully lit, beautifully laid-out and warmed by reclaimed and re-purposed natural timbers, Burdock & Co.’s interior embraces a rustic meets industrial chic theme. In addition to steel finishes and a white washed brick wall, thoughtful homely touches like coat hooks, freshly picked flowers, vintage cutlery and glassware have been appointed to the room.

Showcasing local and seasonal dishes Burdock & Co. continues to deliver a level of dining that other establishments simply strive to achieve. As such, Burdock & Co. should be high on any list of Vancouver brunch spots to try, especially when one adds the restaurants charming ambiance and accommodating staff into the mix too.
