Brother of Canucks legend Roberto Luongo lands new NHL gig

Leo Luongo, the brother of Vancouver Canucks icon Roberto, will be back in the NHL for the 2025-26 season.

On Wednesday afternoon, the New Jersey Devils announced a series of hirings, including Leo, who was named their director of goaltending.

“Luongo now oversees all goaltending development and reports to executive vice president of hockey operations Martin Brodeur,” an excerpt from the Devils website reads. “He will work with New Jersey Devils goaltending coach Dan Stewart, Utica goaltending coach Brian Eklund, and New Jersey’s head amateur goalie scout/development coach Manny Legace, while monitoring the organization’s current and potential future goaltenders.”

Unlike Roberto, Leo never played hockey at a high level, but began working as a goaltending coach for the QMJHL’s Acadie-Bathurst Titan back in 2008-09. He spent several more seasons in the QMJHL, followed by a lengthy stint in Europe, before landing an AHL gig with the Springfield Thunderbirds for the 2016-17 season.

Leo continued to build his resume before finally landing an NHL gig with the Florida Panthers as their goaltending development coach for the 2020-21 campaign. He’s remained with the Panthers organization ever since, giving him a chance to work alongside Roberto, who serves as a special advisor to GM Bill Zito.

These changes come after a disappointing Devils season in which they finished the regular season with just 87 points. Several firings came as a result, including the now-former goaltending coach, Dave Rogalski.

The Devils made a big change in the crease as well, trading Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers. As of now, they have a three-goalie tandem in Jake Allen, Nico Daws, and recent free-agent signing David Rittich.
