Brendan Gallagher has picked a new Canucks jersey number

It looks like Brendan Gallagher has picked a number.

Acquired by the Vancouver Canucks in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, Gallagher was asked about the jersey number he’ll go with when speaking to the media.

“I have an idea. I want to think about it a little bit more, but I do have an idea of something I’m going to wear,” Gallagher said.

Gallagher wore No. 11 in Montreal and in junior, when he starred for the Vancouver Giants. That number hasn’t been in circulation with the Canucks since Wayne Maki’s tragic death in 1974, other than when Mark Messier inexplicably wore it during his three seasons in Vancouver from 1997 to 2000.

Gallagher’s number was revealed by Vanbase, the official shop of the Canucks, which posted a photo of Gallagher wearing No. 7 on Tuesday afternoon.

We don’t yet know the meaning behind the number seven for Gallagher.

No. 7 became available on Monday when the Canucks chose not to extend a qualifying offer to Pierre-Olivier Joseph, who wore it last season. Carson Soucy has also worn the number in recent years.

The most successful Canucks to wear No. 7 are Andre Boudrias, Gary Lupul, Cliff Ronning, and Brendan Morrison.
