Brock Boeser’s time with the Vancouver Canucks seems to be coming to an end.
The pending free agent has admitted he’s unlikely to re-sign with the team this summer. That means tonight’s game, Boeser’s 554th for the Canucks, could be his last with the organization.
Boeser has been with the team through many highs and lows. He’s the longest tenured current member and ranks eighth all-time in franchise goals, as well as 12th in points.
With all he’s been through and the uncertainty he now faces, tonight is a significant contest, although Boeser is just trying to focus on ending the season on a high note.
“I’m going to really just try and focus on having a good game with my teammates tonight and finish strong,” he said about tonight’s game. “We don’t want to go out there and not play a good game and lose the game. We want to finish strong, then I’ll start thinking about everything after the year.”
Canucks fans have embraced Boeser over the years. He’s definitely a fan favourite, and tonight could get emotional as the fanbase understands it might be his last time wearing the sweater.
“The fans have been great to me during my time here. They’ve always been supportive. Whether it’s at a season ticket member event or just seeing people out in public, everyone’s been so great to me. I love the fanbase here, they’re great.”
“During some of my years here, we’ve had some rough years, and the fans have stuck by our side and have always been positive and really cheered us on. It’s always great to have them on your side and be supportive.”
“I’m sure it’ll be emotional for him, he’s been such a big part of this city,” said teammate Tyler Myers before adding his comments didn’t mean Boeser was gone for sure. “I’m sure he’s thinking about it, and we’ll see what happens.”
While all signs indicate a likely divorce, the door hasn’t fully closed on Boeser returning next season. He reportedly rejected a five-year, $40 million offer but if either he or the Canucks were willing to budge, they could still come to an agreement before next year.
“You never know what can happen,” continued Boeser. “We’ll see what happens. Like I said, I’m sure I’ll talk with my agent after the season and see if anything can come to an agreement or not… just try to take [tonight] in with my teammates and I mean, you really never know at the end of the day so I don’t really want to fully think that it could be my last game so I’m just going to take it as another game and finish the year.”
