Trey Yesevage has arrived for the Toronto Blue Jays and will be getting the ball for his first MLB start this week.
The 22-year-old right-handed pitcher has turned heads in the minors, skyrocketing up the ranks throughout the season, eventually earning a call-up from the AL-leading Blue Jays over the weekend.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed on Sunday that the team isn’t wasting any time getting Yesavage into action, as he will take to the mound for his MLB debut on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays.
“He’s gonna start tomorrow in Tampa,” Schneider said. “I think the scales have been tipping for a while… We just want to have the best 14 pitchers that we have in our system helping us win games.”
“We’ll see [if he joins the starting rotation permanently], he definitely can. We’re trying to figure out ways to win as many games as we can. If that’s him in the rotation, great; if not, great. We think he’s fully capable of being a major league starter.”
It’s been a meteoric rise for the Pennsylvania product since he was drafted 20th overall by the Blue Jays in the 2024 MLB Draft. This is his first full season with an MLB organization, and he has seen action at every level of the minor leagues before getting to this point.
Yesavage met with the media on Sunday morning as well, where he spoke about how much this moment means to him.
“It’s insane, I’ve always dreamed about this and it’s finally come true,” Yesavage said. “I was very emotional at first and after that, I was almost numb. I didn’t know what to feel. It was a whirlwind of emotions.
“I’ve been training for this, I’m ready for it… I’m adaptable, I can be thrown into any situation, any time in a game and still give everything I’ve got for the team.”

The first person he told after getting the call? His girlfriend, who Yesavage said cried when she heard the news.
Yesavage has gone coast-to-coast this season as well, having pitched 17 innings with the Vancouver Canadians in Single-A before now making his way to Toronto. In total, he has thrown 98 minor league innings this season with stints in High-A, Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A.
Over that time, he has allowed just 54 hits and eight home runs along with 34 earned runs and an ERA of 3.12. Yesavage has a 5-1 record this season as well.
He has been excellent at every challenge thrown at him this season, having put up great numbers at each level:
- High-A (Dunedin Blue Jays): 33.1 IP, 19 H, 9 ER, 3 HR
- Single-A (Vancouver Canadians): 17.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 HR
- Double-A (New Hampshire Fisher Cats): 30 IP. 21 H, 15 ER, 3 HR
- Triple-A (Buffalo Bisons): 17.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 0 HR
Having Yesavage come up late in the season will allow the Blue Jays another option on the mound as they mount a late-season push to hold on to the AL East crown. Schneider did not rule out keeping the 22-year-old in the starting rotation, but the team could also move him into the bullpen if they want.
The Jays will be looking to get off on the right note in Yesavage’s MLB debut as the Rays have had Toronto’s number this season, winning five of the previous six meetings. Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, and Chris Bassitt are expected to follow Yesavage for the remainder of that Tampa Bay series.
