Toronto Blue Jays celebrate playoff berth with champagne-popping clubhouse party

The Toronto Blue Jays are postseason-bound, and they celebrated in fashion.

An 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday officially clinched a playoff spot for the Blue Jays. This came after a four-game losing streak that delayed the clinch.

However, thanks to some great innings by Trey Yesavage, Eric Lauer, and Jeff Hoffman, the Blue Jays will play postseason ball once again. This also marked the 90th victory of the season for the Blue Jays, making Toronto the first team in the American League to hit that plateau this season.

The Jays celebrated the clinch in the visiting team’s clubhouse after the game with champagne and goggles being brought out.

“This is one to celebrate,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said before several champagne bottles were popped.

Baseball is known for its extravagant celebrations after every postseason-related accomplishment. For some, celebrating this hard for a clinch may seem a bit excessive, but getting to this point during a gruelling 162-game schedule is no small feat.

Advancing to the MLB playoffs is much harder to do than in any other major sport in North America. During the Blue Jays’ 49-year history, they have advanced to the postseason just 11 times. They had a stretch of 19 seasons without a postseason appearance between 1995 and 2014.

Considering that, it’s no wonder that the players were quick to bring out the champagne.

This is only the beginning of the battle for Toronto, as they are still in a dogfight for the AL East division title with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. They are also trying to hold onto the American League lead with the Yankees and Seattle Mariners breathing down their necks.

With just six games left on the regular season schedule, clinching is a nice feeling, but there is a lot more work to be done before October rolls around.
