The Toronto Blue Jays saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in a 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.
Despite the loss, the Blue Jays have been rolling as of late, with an 89-63 record that has them four games ahead of the New York Yankees for the AL East Division lead. While they are getting great results, there are some concerns for this team.
The Jays are a banged-up bunch with the playoffs nearing. Not only has Bo Bichette been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season with a PCL sprain in his left knee, but Anthony Santander, the Jays’ prized offseason signing, has only just started a rehab stint as a result of a shoulder injury that’s had him sidelined since May.
Relief pitcher Yimi Garcia is out for the year, while another bullpen arm, Nick Sandlin, hasn’t pitched since July 7. And, of course, these are only the injuries we know about.
Though nothing has been said by the time, Jeff Hoffman’s velocity is hitting concerning lows as of late, indicating he’s less than 100 per cent.
Following yesterday’s loss, Kevin Gausman — who continued his recent dominance by giving up just one earned run through six innings — indicated that there are plenty of players in the Jays clubhouse dealing with different ailments.
“Me and Vladdy were talking today. It’s like, nobody feels good, but let’s go,” Gausman said. “That’s kind of what it is right now. Give whatever you got.”
These comments further indicate just how crucial it is for the Blue Jays to be able to bye past the wild-card series. They are currently in line to do that, as the Detroit Tigers lead the AL Central at 85-67, while the Houston Astros lead the AL West at 84-69.
Faring well over their final 10 games of the season should allow the Jays to get that desired bye, and hopefully, in the process, allow for their banged-up players to get healthy.
