A surprise sequel to the 1999 found-footage phenomenon The Blair Witch Project, which was secretly shot right here in Vancouver, was unveiled at the annual San Diego Comic Convention this weekend.
Set for release this September, Blair Witch was originally shot in Vancouver under the title of The Woods. As far as anyone knew the movie was nothing more than the silver screen’s latest scare story, with the film’s distributor Lionsgate even going so far as to release an official trailer for the production.
However, on Friday night, fans were treated to the ultimate rope-a-dope as Lionsgate confirmed that their latest production was actually a sequel to the shaky cam story that first scared the bejesus out of cinemagoers 17 years ago.
Directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest), the film follows Allen McCune (Shameless) as the brother of one of the first film’s characters, who ventures into the woods to find his missing sister.
Blair Witch will be released in theatres on September 16.
