Bianca Andreescu guts out injury scare for gritty victory
Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu didn’t have the cleanest victory of her career on Sunday.
Facing off in Montreal in an opening round matchup in the National Bank Open, the 25-year-old was well on her way to beating Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets.

But with match point on her side as she was serving for the win, Andreescu suddenly collapsed in a heap of pain, in what appeared to be a gruesome ankle injury that caused medical staff to treat her in front of a hushed crowd.

Krejcikova couldn’t close it out, with Andreescu gutting out the final two points for the win.
Andreescu is scheduled to play Mirra Andreeva on Tuesday, although whether that match will go ahead is uncertain given the Canadian star’s injury status. No time has yet been set for the match, though Canadians have traditionally been given centre-court night matches on their home soil.
How has Andreescu’s career looked recently?
Since winning the US Open Singles title in 2019 as an 18-year-old, Andreescu has dealt with a rash of injuries over the last six years, including a knee problem that caused her to miss much of the 2020 season. Ranked No. 4 in the world at her peak, she has slipped all the way down to No. 118 in the world as she’s struggled to put together consistent stretches of good tennis.
Andreescu did not address reporters after the match on Sunday. Before the tournament began, however, Andreescu did address her lengthy injury history and how it has affected her mindset over the years.
“Yeah, I’ve dealt with many things to put me off of the sport. So, that’s always very difficult to deal with, right? Because this is, in a way, what I love to do.Ā So, being away from something that I love is very difficult,” Andreescu told reporters on Sunday prior to the match.
