Bettman making announcement about NHL's "return to play" plan today

May 26 2020, 5:09 pm

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is set to make an announcement on live television today, in what the league says is “regarding the Return to Play Plan for the 2019-20 NHL season.”

The announcement will come one day after the league revealed Phase 2 of their plan, which involves allowing players to return to the ice at team facilities, likely in early June.

You can watch Bettman’s announcement live on Sportsnet in Canada at 4:30 pm ET/1:30 pm PT, or stream it on NHL.com and the league’s official Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube channels. Bettman and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly will also take questions from media members via video call.

This is the first announcement of this kind made by any of the major pro sports leagues in North America. It’s expected that Bettman will confirm the widely reported 24-team playoff format, though there are many more unknowns.

Will Bettman reveal the NHL’s plan with regard to hub cities? Will we hear a formal plan about what happens when/if a player tests positive? What about the date of the draft and the format of the draft lottery?

We’ll have to tune in to find out.
