We did some digging and painstaking taste-testing to bring you this list of the best epic eats to enjoy at the Vancouver Christmas Market for 2018.
Das Spätzle Haus
If you don’t like spätzle then you can’t sit with us. For real. One of the best foods at the market (if not the top one, as it’s hard to find in the city any other time of year) spätzle is handmade egg noodle with spices fried and topped with caramelized onions and wild mushroom cream sauce, or pickled onion too. This offering is vegetarian and super delicious.
Freybe Brat Haus
If you go to a German Christmas market and don’t eat a bratwurst did you even go to a German Christmas market? No, the answer is no. So it’s a good this Freybe Brat Haus has returned to serve market-goers their legendary ‘Dat Brat’ traditional German-style bratwurst.
Das Glühwein Haus
Head to the wooden windmill in the middle of the market and you’ll soon find yourself in the long line for mulled wine, or Glühwein, as the Germans say. Get a white or red version, or opt for the red with rum if you’re feeling extra festive. New this year, some folks at the market will be walking around with backpacks full of wine for refills on-the-go (additional purchase required per fill).
Mr. Pretzels
While you might not feel jazzed about a regular old pretzel, you can’t deny a fresh-from-the-oven salty pretzel in during a crisp visit to the market. Underrated, extremely yummy, and easy to double fist with other grub – an important feature for any quality festival/market food.
Mr. Hotcakes
Warm and delightful on a cold Vancouver night, the brand new Mr. Hotcakes offers a sweet and savoury version of their unique pastries. Not a pancake but not a crepe, the sweet version consists of a cinnamon and sugar-filled dough disc wrapped around soft serve ice cream and whipped cream.
Cheese Me Raclette
Did someone say melted cheese? It’s the unofficial season of raclette – aka melted cheese scraped from the wheel – so get your stretchy pants on and celebrate. This is the only vendor serving this Swiss delicacy in the city, so get it while you can.
Das Kuchen Haus
This German ‘Cake House’ also serves killer doughnuts filled with strawberry jam or apple pie filling. Soft, fresh, and utterly satisfying. The Berliner Krapfen are a must-get at the market and if you can’t fathom eating another morsel after your visit, we recommend getting one to go.
