Jun 2 2016, 12:40 am

Sure, Vancouver isn’t known around the world for having an abundance of bagel shops. However, what the city lacks in quantity, it more than makes up with quality.

Whether you’re after a dense, slightly sweet Montreal-style bagel or a soft, chewy, doughy New York-style bagel, check out our tastiest picks for where to find the best bagels in Vancouver.

Siegel’s Bagels

Established in 1990, family-run Siegel’s Bagels has gained legendary status in Vancouver as a go-to spot for authentic Montreal-style bagels. Founder by Joel Siegel, who grew up working in a bagel shop in Montreal–a city famous for its bagels, Siegel’s Bagels offers round rings of doughy goodness that are kettle boiled and then baked in a custom 25-tonne wood burning oven. The result, a crisp, chewy, and delicious baked good. Night owls will be happy to note that the Kits branch is open 24 hours a day!

Rosemary Rocksalt’s top-notch bagels have become increasingly popular, since the bagelry opened its doors back in 2012. It’s not really a surprise that the bagels are regarded so highly, as one of the co-founders is Parise Siegel, Joel Siegel’s daughter. Well-versed in the bagel making world, Parise and her team create some truly moreish Montreal-style bagels. Grab a dozen bagels to-go or order a single serve with a schmear of cream cheese and smoked salmon.

Solly’s Bagelry

Somewhat of a Vancouver institution, Solly’s Bagelry is a Jewish family-run bakery and deli, which launched in 1994. Solly’s offers a variety of Jewish baked goods, in addition to their signature Brooklyn-style “Boiled Bagels,” which are baked in the traditional way to give them a chewy texture. The bagels are available in Plain, Poppy, Sesame, Whole Wheat, Whole Grain, Herb, Onion, Mishmash (everything bagel), and Cinnamon Raisin.

Mount Royal Bagel Factory

This modest-sized shop on the North Shore is dedicated to making freshly baked Montreal-style bagels. Boiled, then baked, Mount Royal’s bagels are dense and best paired with Mount Royal’s freshly blended homemade cream cheese spreads, which come in Plain, Basil and Garlic, Sun-dried Tomato, Lox, and Honey Vanilla flavours.

Beyond Bread

Kitsilano’s artisan bakery Beyond Bread is known for their organic baked breads, which are made with natural leaven and crafted by hand daily. In addition to loaves, baguettes, and pretzels, Beyond Bread also prepares bagels, which come plain, or coated with either poppy or sesame seeds. Available on Saturdays only, Beyond Bread’s bagels lean towards more of a NYC-style bagel; they’re soft, slightly sweet, and freshly boiled in barley malt water.
