Burnaby RCMP completed inspections of 67 commercial vehicles and found something interesting on a driver’s B.C. truck that was quite the DIY fix.

The enforcement blitz took place on Feb. 25 by the Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement group to “educate” commercial truck drivers and enforce the rules of the road.

It took place on Marine Way, near Roseberry Avenue in South Burnaby.

In total, Burnaby RCMP completed 67 inspections, placed 35 commercial vehicles out of service, identified 172 violations, and issued 117 violation tickets.

In one particular incident involving a B.C. truck, the enforcement group found that a fuel cap was missing and covered with a sandwich bag, which was secured by a charging cable.

Burnaby RCMP shared details of some other inspections, including a fuel tank that was secured to a vehicle by two non-rated straps, including one that was damaged and another pressing against a broken piece of the fuel tank that was cutting into the strap.

“The original housing that secured the fuel tank to the truck had completely broken off,” Burnaby RCMP shared.

In a separate incident, a truck had a defective steering mechanism. In another separate incident, a trailer’s emergency brake was inoperative.

“Unbelievably, all these violations, and more, were noted on one dump truck pulling a flat deck trailer with a bobcat. The driver was issued six violation tickets totalling $1,215 in fines. The truck and trailer licence plates were seized, and both vehicles were towed and ordered to immediately be taken to a designated inspection facility,” Burnaby RCMP said in a release.

Burnaby RCMP Constable Kevin Connolly said that many professional drivers and companies follow safety laws, but this was “clearly” not one of them.

“This is not an accurate representation of every commercial vehicle on our roadways, it is, however, a good example of why we do these inspections,” he added.
