Teaching staff in Vancouver Coastal Health region to get COVID-19 vaccine starting Friday

Some good news for school staff and teachers in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

The VCH authority plans to make a supply of the COVID-19 vaccine available for all staff in each of the school districts in its boundaries starting on Friday.

The information was contained in a letter sent to Vancouver School District staff from Superintendent Suzanne Hoffman on Wednesday, and released on Twitter by former longtime VSB board chair Patti Bacchus.

The letter says all VSB staff will be eligible to be vaccinated regardless of their role in the district.

Starting this weekend, the health authority will contact staff at schools and district sites to let them know when it is their turn to book an appointment, Hoffman writes.

The clinics will be held outside of school hours, on evenings and weekends, according to Hoffman.

The letter does not say which vaccine staff will receive.

Last month, the province announced more than 300,000 frontline workers in British Columbia would be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination “as priority groups.”

It identified K-12 educational staff, as well as first responders (police, firefighters, emergency transport), as some of the highest-risk worksites across the province and where vaccination efforts would be focused.
