Renters in Metro Vancouver and British Columbia are getting some good news as the B.C. government has announced a lower rent increase cap for 2027.
The rent increase cap for 2026 is 2.3 per cent. Next year, B.C. says it’ll be 2.2 per cent.
The B.C. Ministry of Housing says this is the seventh consecutive year that the maximum allowable increase has been capped at or below inflation.
In a statement, the ministry says that the move will help more British Columbians find a home they can afford and build a life in the community they love.
“At a time when many people are feeling the impact of rising costs, linking rent increases to inflation helps renters, including seniors and families, meet their housing expenses, while also ensuring landlords can continue providing stable, well-maintained homes for renters for years to come,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, in a release.
“Our focus from the start has been on helping people across B.C. find housing that fits their needs and budgets. Thanks to our work to increase housing supply, crack down on illegal short-term rentals and limit foreign investment in the housing market, B.C. has seen a 4.5 per cent decrease in overall average rents.”
Over recent months, Boyle has continuously celebrated monthly rent reports, which overall have reported declines compared to previous years.
The ministry said that before 2019, renters faced an additional 2 per cent increase in addition to inflation, which cost B.C. families hundreds of dollars in additional rent. The ministry’s statement says that if the change hadn’t taken place, allowable rent increases would’ve reached up to 5.6 per cent in 2024.

The maximum annual rent increase for 2027 begins on Jan. 1, 2027, and the ministry says announcing it now provides landlords the time they need to give the required minimum three months’ notice to renters.
