BC’s police watchdog has been called in following a traffic incident this week in Surrey, during which one man suffered what were described as “serious injuries.”

According to the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC), on January 7, around 9:30 pm, a Surrey Traffic officer saw a vehicle “committing what they believed to be a number of Motor Vehicle Act infractions” while travelling eastbound on 104 Avenue.

In response, the officer “activated their emergency equipment” and attempted to pull the vehicle over.  The vehicle failed to stop, however, and went through an intersection before losing control and flipping “multiple times” near 104 Avenue and 160 Street.

The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was taken to hospital by emergency crews. Nobody else was hurt in the incident.

Now, the IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the driver’s injuries.

As the matter is now under investigation, the IIO BC said no further information will be released.
