B.C. man crashes motorcycle by failing to follow 'basic road rules'

A B.C. man faces several violations and fines after ignoring “basic road rules,” causing him to crash his motorcycle.

A video from the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) shows what happened to a 37-year-old Chilliwack man who was riding his motorcycle in a not-so-safe way.

According to BCHP, the incident took place on June 18, 2026, at around 9:30 a.m. on Highway 1 near East 1st Avenue in Vancouver.

A BCHP officer was in heavy traffic when someone on a black Harley passed on the right shoulder.

“When the police officer activated his lights and siren, a blue pickup truck signalled and pulled off to the right as required by law. Instead of doing the same thing, the motorcyclist continued passing on the right, which resulted in running over a road sign and into the rear of the blue pickup,” BCHP said.

Video shared by BCHP shows exactly what transpired. The video starts with the B.C. motorcycle rider barrelling into frame on the shoulder. The motorcyclist attempts to pass another vehicle on the shoulder. That vehicle, attempting to pull to the side after hearing sirens, gets in front of the Harley, sending the rider over the barricade.

The motorcyclist then stands up and seemingly goes over to the vehicle that stopped in front of him to confront them. A cop is then seen walking into frame to approach the motorcycle rider before the video cuts off.

BCHP Corporal Michael McLaughlin says that while passing on the right “enrages” motorists, that’s not the main reason it’s illegal.

“The side of the road has rocks, sand, garbage, shredded truck tires and other hazards, and if someone pulls off the road suddenly, you could end up badly hurt or worse,” McLaughlin said.

The 37-year-old Harley rider was arrested for flight from police and later released. He faces several violations, including a $109 ticket for passing on the right, a $196 ticket for driving without consideration, and his Harley is impounded for seven days.

McLaughlin said he’s glad no one was hurt.

“Consider this a warning to everyone; BC Highway Patrol can and will ticket drivers who pass on the right.”
