Fire departments and inspection agencies around BC are hiring for firefighting jobs, which pay well above a living wage.

Many municipal fire departments have open calls for applicants, and most follow a fairly structured pay system.

For example, Vancouver Fire Rescue Services’ standard pay for all firefighters is $72,706 for the first six months. It progresses to $103,871 at the start of the fourth year of service and increases to $110,095 (beginning of the 15th year).

These are some of the highest-paying fire-related roles around Metro Vancouver. Many of the roles don’t require much more than the completion of grade 12.

The City of Burnaby is currently looking for a full-time fire prevention inspector, and it pays up to $10,655 per month. Applicants must have completed grade 12 and have some relevant experience, which is considered an asset. The successful applicant would assist firefighters in carrying out certain inspections in private and public buildings. A valid BC driver’s licence is required.

The City of Richmond is also seeking applicants for the firefighter recruit position. The position pays $6,301.68 per month and also requires the completion of grade 12. Other requirements include one year of work experience and the completion of some fire-related courses.

If you want to spend some time in Cranbrook, BC, the Regional District of East Kootenay is looking for firefighters to be part of a work experience program. Eight positions are up for grabs, which pay $30 an hour.

“Nestled within the beautiful Rocky and Purcell Mountains in the southeast corner of British Columbia, the East Kootenay region is a four-season destination,” the job listing touts. The position does come with specific certification requirements.

Wildfire season is around the corner, and Kamloops is getting ready. The Backwood Wildfire Corp is hiring wildland firefighters with positions that pay up to $35 an hour. The position also requires applicants to have some fire suppression certification, among other qualifications.

Health and security service firm International SOS is also hiring firefighters for a casual position which pays $400 a day. The schedule is two weeks on and two weeks off, and there is also a requirement to complete some courses that are relevant to the job. Applicants also receive $500 in travel reimbursement.
