BC Ferries has announced additional sailings ahead of the Family Day long weekend, the first holiday weekend of 2020.

According to a statement from the company, more than 20 sailings are being added between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Specifically, the sailings are being added to the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route, which is the busiest of the entire fleet.

BC Ferries says that last year, more than 205,000 passengers were carried during the long weekend.

Based on trends from prior years, the most popular travel times are expected to be Thursday and Friday afternoon, as well as Saturday morning. Family Day Monday and the Tuesday morning are traditionally the busiest sailing times for passengers to return from Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast to Metro Vancouver.

In order to avoid sailing waits, passengers are recommended to make a reservation or travel at off-peak times. Riders are also advised to consider alternate or backup parking options, as parking lots at the major terminals can fill up quickly on long weekends.

Walk-on passengers are advised to arrive 45 to 60 minutes prior to the scheduled sailing. The holiday Monday is typically the most popular day of the year for those travelling on foot.
