A rough weekend for BC Ferries continues into Monday as ongoing engine trouble sidelines the Queen of Surrey “for the time being.”

According to BC Ferries, several sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Duke Point in Nanaimo have been cancelled, including:

  • 6:15 a.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay
  • 2:45 p.m. leaving Departure Bay
  • 7:25 p.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay
  • 10:40 p.m. leaving Departure Bay

The 5:30 p.m. sailing departing Horseshoe Bay to Langdale on the Sunshine Coast has also been cancelled.

Ceilidh Marlow, senior communications advisor for BC Ferries, told Daily Hive on Sunday that the Queen of Surrey experienced “an unexpected issue with the main engine #2 Turbocharger” on Saturday night.

“This resulted in cancelled sailings yesterday evening and into this morning. Our engineering team is on-site working to repair the issue, but the vessel remains out of service for the time being,” she said in an email.

BC Ferries was forced to cancel several sailings on Sunday between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale.

The company also deployed water taxis, including two 12-passenger boats and two larger vessels carrying 38 and 40 passengers, free of charge between the two terminals until the ferry is back in service.

Those who have been impacted by the cancelled sailings will be contacted by the Customer Service Centre to let them know if another sailing can be arranged today, or if their booking must be cancelled.

Cancellations will be refunded.
