BC Ferries cancels more Horseshoe Bay–Langdale sailings

BC Ferries travellers on the Sunshine Coast route are facing another round of cancellations on Sunday after engine trouble sidelined the Queen of Surrey.

In a service notice issued on Sunday, Sept. 21, BC Ferries said a “mechanical difficulty with the vessel’s main engine turbocharger” led to several morning sailings being cancelled, along with two more in the afternoon.

According to the notice, the 6:20 a.m. Langdale departure, 7:30 a.m. Horseshoe Bay departure, 8:40 a.m. Langdale departure, 9:50 a.m. Horseshoe Bay departure, and 11 a.m. Langdale sailing were cancelled.

Later in the day, the 2:55 p.m. sailing from Horseshoe Bay and the 4:10 p.m. sailing from Langdale were also scrapped.

To help offset the disruption, BC Ferries added two supplemental sailings, 11:05 a.m. from Horseshoe Bay and noon from Langdale.

Regular service is scheduled to resume with the 12:10 p.m. Horseshoe Bay departure and the 1:15 p.m. Langdale sailing, although crews anticipate about a 45-minute delay for the rest of the day.

The company also deployed water taxis, including two 12-passenger boats and two larger vessels carrying 38 and 40 passengers, free of charge between the two terminals until the ferry is back in service.

Ceilidh Marlow, senior communications advisor for BC Ferries, told Daily Hive that the Queen of Surrey experienced “an unexpected issue with the main engine #2 Turbocharger” on Saturday night.

“This resulted in cancelled sailings yesterday evening and into this morning. Our engineering team is on-site working to repair the issue, but the vessel remains out of service for the time being,” she said in an email.

On X, frustration was clear from some passengers who said they weren’t warned in time.

“It’s too bad you could not have informed people before they showed up at the ferry this morning,” one person wrote.

Another mentioned they were now facing extra costs and might need to book a hotel for the night.

Others were more understanding.

Another passenger shared, “Thank you for getting the Queen of Oak Bay underway to Langdale!!! And thank you for keeping us updated. I had a reservation for 8:40 and got a call on my way here.”

Marlow added that while teams are working around the clock, the situation underscores the challenges of keeping aging vessels in service.

“It underscores why renewing the fleet and adding capacity are so critical — newer vessels bring greater reliability, and we will also continue advocating for an additional vessel in the fleet to provide the resilience needed when issues arise,” she told Daily Hive.
