An unfolding incident at a Denny’s restaurant in Kamloops has police currently on scene, roads in the area closed, and surrounding businesses and neighbours on high alert.

According to Kamloops RCMP, the incident began early this morning when the man went into the restaurant, located at 6th Avenue and Columbia Street, where he ordered some food.

“After receiving his bill, he made a threat,” said police in a statement. “The wait-staff alerted the other employees and customers who all evacuated the building, leaving the man
alone inside of the restaurant.”

When police arrived on scene, the suspect reportedly closed all of the
blinds to the restaurant.

At one point, police noted, the man did leave the restaurant brandishing a knife. When confronted by officers he went back inside.

Currently, the RCMP have the restaurant surrounded and are attempting
to establish contact with the suspect.

As a precautionary measure, the natural gas has been shut off to the
restaurant.

In addition, all residents in the area are being asked to stay inside unless they
wish to leave their residence and the area until the situation has been
resolved. Motorists and pedestrians are also being asked to avoid the area.
