B.C. city breaks a 115-year-old freezing cold weather record

The weather around B.C. has been chilly and cold over the past week, and several cities broke records this morning, including one city that just smashed a 115-year-old record.

According to the daily weather summaries from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), 10 B.C. spots broke records as of 3:16 a.m. on Oct. 14.

While Vancouver has been pretty cold over the last week, it is nowhere near the temperature that the city of Quesnel reached.

Quesnel broke an Oct. 14 record that has been in place for over a century, as it reached a temperature of -9.1˚C. The previous Oct. 14 record was set back in 1910, when the city hit a temperature of -7.8˚C.

According to ECCC, that temperature is well below what’s normal for this time of year in Quesnel, which is usually around a low of 0˚C. Quesnel could also see some flurries later this week, according to the latest forecast.

The Tatlayoko Lake settlement, located near the Homathko River, recorded the coldest temperature in B.C. on Oct. 14, reaching -12.3˚C.

It’s a stark reversal of some of the weather stories we reported on earlier this year, which involved hot temperature records being broken. Less than two months ago, in late August, we reported that Lytton broke a hot weather record dating back to 1958. On Aug. 25, Lytton hit a temperature of 40.3˚C.

That temperature was the highest recorded in the entire country in 2025.

Then last month, on Sept. 2, Lytton again reached a temperature of 40˚C, tying three other locations for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada.

Other B.C. spots that saw cold temperature records set for Oct. 14 include Bella Bella (-1.6˚C), Chetwynd (-7.7˚C), Port Alberni (-2.2˚C), Port Hardy (-2.3˚C), Prince George (-11.3˚C), Puntzi Mountain (-11.3˚C), Sechelt (1.4˚C), and Terrace (-2.8˚C).
