Why B.C. cannabis sales saw an abrupt and massive drop off last fall

While B.C. cannabis sales have held steady for most of 2025, it was reefer madness last fall when the province saw a massive drop off, while every other province saw an increase.

According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, weed sales in B.C. tanked in October 2025, and there is one reason why.

Between January and September 2025, B.C. weed sales averaged somewhere in the ballpark of $65 million a month.

In September 2025, B.C. reported around $69 million in cannabis sales.

In October, that dropped by over half to $31 million.

If you recall, last fall, the BCGEU was involved in historic job action like the province had never seen. That job action had impacted the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB), which also manages cannabis distribution.

In a statement, the B.C. government shared some information about the work stoppage and how it impacted cannabis distribution.

“The BC General Employees’ Union strike shut down BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) Cannabis Wholesale Operations from September 22 until October 27, during which time wholesale cannabis orders were unable to be placed or processed through the LDB’s central delivery channel,” Daily Hive learned.

Retail stores were unable to replenish stock during this time, aside from those that purchased through the direct delivery channel,” the government added.

B.C.’s own report into cannabis sales doesn’t come out until the end of the month.

Due to these factors, B.C. was the only province in Canada that didn’t see sales jump in October 2025, compared to September 2025.

It also put B.C. even further below Alberta, which recorded $86 million in sales in October 2025.

Leading all provinces was Ontario, which recorded around $187 million in cannabis sales that month.
