Bard on the Beach has been a summer tradition in Vancouver for over 30 years, and for the 2026 season, the Shakespeare fest is embarking on a new, exciting chapter.
The folks behind Bard have announced Bard After Dark, which it describes as “four nights of late-night shenanigans” presented by some of the country’s best improvisers.
A spokesperson for the event says that folks from Tightrope Theatre will be curating the adults-only “late-night cabaret.”
Adults only means yes, you can drink. A regular ticket is $25 or $20 with a same-day performance ticket.
“The inaugural series represents an exciting new chapter for Bard on the Beach as the Festival moves beyond the traditional performance. Presented in partnership with Tightrope Theatre, Bard After Dark transforms the Douglas Campbell Theatre into an intimate late-night cabaret where every performance is completely unique.”
The show will feature a rotating cast of Canada’s best improvisers, and audience suggestions will inspire each show.
A statement suggests fans will be in store for evenings of unexpected characters, musical moments, and laugh-out-loud surprises.
“After dark” events have become a bit of a trend in Vancouver in recent years, and a popular one at that. Science World After Dark is another example.
“One of the things audiences love most about Bard is the atmosphere and with Bard After Dark, we’re extending that experience late into the evening with something playful, spontaneous, and completely different,” said Christopher Gaze, Bard on the Beach Founding Artistic Director, in a statement.
“We hope audiences will make a night of it as they celebrate live theatre. Even if you aren’t seeing one of our productions before this event, you can still purchase a ticket to come experience Bard After Dark,” Gaze said.
Gaze was recently recognized with a national honour.
Tightrope sounds excited too.
Ali Froggatt, co-founder and artistic director of Tightrope Improv Theatre, said, “We can’t wait to bring some more mischief and play into these legendary tents that already hold so much magic. It’s an honour!”
