Beloved Vancouver Chinatown shop closing after nearly 50 years

After almost 50 years serving Vancouver’s Chinatown community and patrons from all over, Bamboo Village will be closing at the end of the month.
The East Pender plants, home decor, and cultural goods store announced on social media that its last day will be on Saturday, Jan. 31, and it will be holding a close-out sale during its final week.
“After nearly half a century of business in Chinatown, our family will be closing Bamboo Village at the end of this month,” said an Instagram post.
“Come dig through our archives and see what last chance treasures you can find.”

Though the family-run business has operated in Chinatown for nearly five decades, Bamboo Village opened its storefront at 135 E Pender St. in 2000.
The store offers Chinese antiques, bamboo goods, ceramics, and a huge variety of plants.
Supporters on social media thanked owners Keller and Dixon Ng for all of their service to the community over the years, and wished them the best in their retirement.

“You will be so missed,” said one commenter. “Thank you for bringing so much joy and greenery to the neighbourhood. I treasure my plants from your store so much.”
“Bamboo Village is a sanctuary,” added another. “Many of my favourite home things have come from you.
“Even though I live far away now, I still think about your kind words and encouragement whenever I water the plants that live in the pots from your store, or eat from my favourite plates and bowls.”

The store’s owners shared their gratefulness to the community for their longstanding support.
“We thank each and every one of you for being a part of our journey through all these changing seasons,” added Bamboo Village. “It has been the blessing of a lifetime to serve this community and watch so many families grow up and old alongside our own.
“Although we wish we could spend another lifetime together, all good things must come to an end. We thank you for being our Village for three generations.”
Bamboo Village isn’t the only longtime Metro Vancouver business to close its doors recently.
