20 Vancouver food events worth checking out this August

Featuring food festivals, seafood boils, and the popular ticketed annual event Diner en Blanc, Vancouver’s food events calendar for August is sprinkled with a number of fun food-focused outings.

We’ve complied a list, which we will keep adding to, of upcoming food-related events happening in the city this August.

Latab Food/Fort Berens Wine Dinner

Latab Food and Fort Berens Winery are joining forces to host a winemakers dinner pairing the food created by Chef Kris Barnholden and the wines of Fort Berens Winery. Tickets are $115 and are inclusive of food, wine, gratuity, and tax.

Dinner on the Pier

Dinner on the Pier returns to the North Shore this year, offering diners the chance to enjoy a spectacular meal in a spectacular setting while raising funds for a terrific cause. In its sophomore year, Dinner on the Pier will place on Thursday, August 4, and once again find diners seated under the skies on the Burrard Dry Dock Pier in North Van’s Lower Lonsdale. With last year’s success of Dinner on the Pier, the event has doubled their capacity this year from 150 to 300 seats at the table.

Mixology Night on the Pier

The Harmony Arts Festival has introduced a terrific new event this year, the Mixology Night on the Pier. The fundraising event in West Vancouver will showcase Vancouver’s top bartenders and the growing cocktail culture. The evening will feature an exciting pop up beach lounge, a cocktail competition, catered food, and great music along the gorgeous Ambleside Pier. The goal of this event is to sell 250 tickets and raise $15,000 for local art programs.

Minimalist Baker Cookbook Signing

Minimalist Baker, Dana Shultz, is coming to Vancouver for the first time ever to promote her brand new cookbook. Although the cooking demo, which she is presenting with Erin Ireland, is sold out, Shultz will stay around for book signing at the tail end of the event, taking place on August 4 at Nourish Cafe.

YVR Food Fest

Food Cart Fest has rebranded to YVR Food Fest this year. Running from August 5 to August 7 YVR Food Fest will showcase international culinary talent collaborating on long table dinners, food talks, private dinners, and cocktail parties. The flagship event is the Street Food Showdown: a two-day gathering of 80 plus food carts, restaurants, wineries, and breweries in the Olympic Village. During this event participating food vendors will be offering up an unlimited tasting menu for a two-hour feeding frenzy.

Truck Stop Concert Series

The third and final outdoor summer concert hosted by Red Truck Brewery will take place on August 6. Featuring musical acts such as Jon Pardi, The Washboard Union, JJ Shiplett, and Dan Davidson, as well as a variety of Red Truck Beer and food trucks, Red Truck’s August Truck Stop Concert is sure to be a great and lively event.

Come Forage with Chef Christ Whittaker

On August 7 Come Forage with Chef Chris Whittaker on beautiful Fraser Common Farm, and Laurica Farm. Tour the two farms, all the while learning more about them, and foraging. Then enjoy dinner you helped to forage ingredients for. This event is an annual fundraiser for the ongoing educational programs of Fraser Common Farm.

Sunday Seafood Boils at Boulevard Kitchen

Join Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar for the return of their popular Sunday Seafood Boil Series. Taking place on the restaurant’s streetside patio, Boulevard’s talented chefs will once again serve up a fresh-caught bounty of jumbo prawns, clams, mussels, crawfish, and Dungeness crab with all the fixings for a series of classic, East Coast-inspired seafood boils served family-style on communal tables.

Caskapalooza

CRAFT Beer Market is excited to announce the return of Caskapalooza this year with over 20 casks to be sampled. Tickets are $25 and judging from last year, they will move fast. Attendees to this event will get the opportunity to sample some great casks and help raise funds towards St. Vincent de Paul. Tickets sold will help sponsor a family in need for Christmas this year.

Les Dames Summerdine

This annual event prides itself as being one of the most fun and best value culinary fundraisers of the year. With dozens of participating restaurants, vineyards, gardens, and cooking schools from Vancouver Island to Metro Vancouver to the Okanagan, each donating one table for a concurrent dinner party, Les Dames Summerdine 2016 is guaranteed to be a delicious and memorable evening. Regardless of the location, all diners are treated to a specially-designed multiple-course menu, wines selected to complement that menu, a special table, and an opportunity to meet and chat with the chefs and restaurateurs.

Seasonal Salmon Bakes

Throughout August a limited number of guests will be able to book a seat at YEW’s communal table for an over-the-top, interactive wild salmon bake. Raise a glass of YEW’s red or white Summer Sangria and make new friends as hands reach across the table to dig in to the generous family-style meal starring whole wild salmon, baked to perfection.

Greasy Spoon Supper Series

Save on Meats’ pop-up Greasy Spoon Diner Supper Series continues in August, challenging yet another notable Canadian chef (or rather chefs in this instance) to take over the kitchen and serve a dining room full of guests. Next in line to step into the Save on Meats kitchen are chefs Christie Peters and Kyle Michael of The Hollows. This event benefits programs that support the local community.

Colab at Latab

On August 15, Latab Food will host an installment of its monthly “Colab @ Latab” event. Presented by the restaurant’s chef and co-owner Kris Barnholden, along with local forager Camille Flanjak of Museum Eats, the August edition will focus on seeds, and will bring together Chef Andrea Carlson from Burdock and Co. and Bar Manager Peter Van Reep from Campagnolo.

Diner en Blanc Vancouver 2016

The popular ticketed annual event that brings together hundreds of strangers for an elegant outdoor all-white dinner party at a top-secret location will take place on Thursday, August 18. 2016 marks the fifth anniversary of Diner en Blanc Vancouver.

Vancouver Craft Brew Cruise

Step on board the Magic Spirt, for the third annual Vancouver Craft Brew Cruise. Setting sail from False Creek, Plaza of Nations, the Vancouver Craft Beer Cruise promises ticket holders a selection of BC’s finest craft beer, while taking in a scenic tour on the open water.

Columbia StreEAT Food Truck Fest

Back for a fourth year, the Columbia StrEAT Food Truck Fest will bring together a whole lot of popular food carts and trucks to the streets of New Westminster for a day of food and fun. The food truck line up includes Tacofino, Vij’s Railway Express, Johnny’s Pops, The Reef Runner, El Cartel, and more.

Rolling into town on June 11, the Eat Rich Food Truck Festival will bring with it a smorgasbord of delicious eats. Running over a number of non-consecutive days throughout the summer Eat Rich will host 10 plus food trucks. Not only will attendees to this outdoor food fiesta be able to enjoy an array of street food fare, but also live entertainment, and activities, which are mostly aimed at kids.
