This year, the PNE is helping attendees wishing to skip the deep fried everything by steering them towards “Healthy Options,” like salads, wraps, juices, and noodles. The PNE’s vendor guide denotes which spots are dishing up healthier eats, and a couple of new vendors this season, like Booster Juice and Gourmet Salads & Wraps, are hitting the midway without the deep fryers full of empty calories.
Still, for those who wish to eat their fill of heart-stopping treats at the PNE, there is much to seek out in 2016. We’ve got a look at a few of the new foods coming out west for this year’s Fair at the PNE–and there might be even more coming as the big day gets closer.
Big Pickle Corndog
Chicky’s Chicken will be joining the PNE this year, offering stuff like popcorn chicken and chicken tenders on sticks, along with their wild signature item, the Big Pickle Corndog. It’s a hot dog stuffed in a pickle, battered and fried corndog-style.
Deep Fried Coffee Treats
Move over hot coffee or frothy frapps: Ogopogo Concession is frying up Deep Fried coffee treats with toppings like Mocha Chip, Salted Caramel, Espresso Flake, French Vanilla and Cream and Sugar. Not enough? They make the Ogopogo Combo: an Iced Cappuccino topped with fresh whip cream and six Deep Fried Coffee treats on a stick.
Gourmet Elephant Ears
Fried dough. As big as an elephant’s ear. Get hungry.
Mac N Cheese Stuffed Burgers
What makes a burger better? Mac N Cheese of course. Handmade Burgers hand-makes their burgers, but stuffs the patties with Mac N Cheese.
Sponge Bob Square Cheese
New this year is the Out of World Kids Food Truck, which caters to the cartoon set. One example of their menu mashups is the Sponge Bog Square Cheese, a festival of yellow as Mac N Cheese meets the grilled cheese.
International Perogies
Perogies serve as a vehicle for a slew of global flavours, from Japan to Greece, to Mexico, and even our own “home and native land” of Canada.
Pancakes & Syrup Gelato and Campfire S’mores Gelato
Vancouver’s beloved La Casa Gelato will be setting up a remote location at the Fair, with 36 of their over 200 flavours on offer. New this year are Pancakes & Syrup and Campfire S’mores.
Butter Chicken Fries
The Fry Guys are all about fries, fries, fries, with toppings, toppings, toppings. This year they’re debuting their Butter Chicken Fries, served up alongside their regular menu of fun fry creations.
PBO Stack: The Reese-Oreo
So a Reese peanut butter cup walks into a couple of Oreos, and it’s a chocolatey, gooey delight. These are going to be at a vendor called Granny’s Cheesecake.
The Fair at the PNE runs Saturday, August 20 through Monday, September 5, 2016 (closed Monday, August 22 and Monday, August 29).
