16-year old B.C. student among first guests of Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon (VIDEO)

Sixteen-year old Victoria resident Ann Makosinski was one of the first guests of The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon which made its premiere this week.

Makosinski was named the 2013 Google Science Fair winner of the age 15-16 category for her prototype of a flashlight powered by body heat. Ever since, she has gained fame within young scientific circles around the world and was named as one of Time magazine’s 30 under 30 for 2013. She also gave TEDx Talks in Metro Vancouver and Redmond, Washington.

On Wednesday night, she appeared in The Tonight Show‘s ‘G.E. Fallonventions’ segment and joined two other young American scientists to demonstrate their inventions.

“Using four Peltier tiles and the temperature difference between the palm of the hand and ambient air, I designed a flashlight that provides bright light without batteries or moving parts,” said Makosinski in her Google project statement. “My design is ergonomic, thermodynamically efficient, and only needs a five degree temperature difference to work and produce up to 5.4 mW at 5 foot candles of brightness.”

When asked by Fallon on how she came up with her invention, she said, “I have a friend in the developing country and she failed a grade because she had no lights, so this was a solution.”

After presenting her body heat powered flashlight invention, Fallon lightheartedly showed off his very own invention – an edible, 4,000 calorie granola cereal bowl.

At the end of the segment, all three inventors were awarded a $5,000 scholarship fund by G.E. This is in addition to Makosinski’s $25,000 scholarship for winning the Google Science Fair.
