American sprinter Noah Lyles talking smack about Canada again

American sprinter Noah Lyles is back at it again with some more backhanded comments about his Canadian rivals.

The 28-year-old and his American teammates got the best of Canada at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo over the weekend. He anchored the U.S. team to a gold medal in the 4 x 100-metre relay, finishing with a time of 37.29 seconds.

That was just slightly faster than the Canadian team of Andre De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, and Brendon Rodney, who finished with a season-best time of 37.55 seconds to secure the silver medal. It was De Grasse who went head-to-head with Lyles in the anchor leg, but was unable to pull ahead.

The outspoken Lyles has a history of starting beef with Canada, and he didn’t pass up the opportunity to do so again after the victory. Lyles voiced his displeasure with how the Canadians handled their gold medal win in the 4 x 100 metre relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“I wouldn’t say it was the best idea for them to shout out ‘USA who?’ after the Olympics. Especially after I didn’t get to show them who USA was,” Lyles remarked. Lyles was unable to race in the 4 x 100 metre Olympic event after testing positive for COVID-19.

Canadians may be familiar with Lyle’s infamous “Canada who?” comments made during the 2024 World Athletics Relays. Not long after that incident, Canada was able to take gold in the 4 x 100 metre relay at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while the U.S. was disqualified due to a botched baton exchange.

“That’s Noah being Noah,” former Canadian sprinter Donovan Bailey said. “I like Noah and the things that he does say. It’s awesome, positive track and field news that’s leading news cycles. But yeah, he’s doing what he’s doing, saying what he’s saying… This definitely should light a fire under the Canadians.”

Canada wrapped up the World Athletics Championships with an impressive medal haul, with gold medals won by race-walker Evan Dunfee and hammer throwers Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers.

Middle-distance runner Marco Arop also claimed bronze in the 800 metres.
