Air quality advisory issued for parts of Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley
An air quality advisory has been issued for parts of the Lower Mainland due to this week’s hot and sunny weather.
The warning was issued by Metro Vancouver and is in effect for eastern Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. An air quality advisory says that high concentrations of ground-level ozone are expected to persist until later today.
“Ground-level ozone is not emitted directly into the air,” officials said in a statement “It is formed when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react in the air in the presence of sunlight.”
“The highest levels of ground-level ozone are generally observed between mid-afternoon and early evening on summer days.”

Residents are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the mid-afternoon and early evening, especially if “breathing feels uncomfortable.”
Exposure is of particular concern to those with underlying conditions such as lung disease, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, diabetes, and pregnant women, young children, and the elderly.
People should do what they can to seek cool and hydrated indoor spaces while still observing physical distancing guidelines to the best of their ability.
Anyone who experiences symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing is asked to seek prompt medical attention.
