
An SUV fleeing an accident scene ended up smashing into a tree in a popular Fraser Valley park, sending three people to the hospital and sparking a police investigation into the crash.
The incident took place on Thursday, April. 9, at about 4:45 p.m., when first responders were alerted to a collision between two vehicles on the eastbound Highway 11 off-ramp at Old Yale Road.
“While en route, officers were advised that one of the vehicles—a blue Hyundai SUV—had fled the initial collision at a high rate of speed,” said Sergeant Paul Walker, media relations officer for the Abbotsford Police Department, on social media.

In startling crash footage shared by Abbotsford Police, the SUV can be seen heading eastbound along Old Yale Road, crossing into oncoming traffic, veering off the road and onto the sidewalk, and colliding with a tree in Crossley Park.
Additional footage shows the tree fallen onto the street and the SUV totalled on the back of a flatbed truck.

“Emergency crews arrived to find three occupants in the SUV,” added Walker. “Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries, and all were transported to hospital as a precaution.
“The driver of the second vehicle involved in the original collision was not injured.”

Commenters shared messages of astonishment online at the collision footage.
“What in the fast and the furious happened here?” asked one person.
“That poor tree didn’t stand a chance. RIP little tree,” added another.

Abbotsford Police added that the investigation is still in the early phases, and anyone who witnessed either collision or who was in Crossley Park at the time should come forward to share what they saw.
