Abbotsford Canucks are on an epic win streak right now

While recent losses mean the Vancouver Canucks are likely to miss the playoffs, the opposite has been true for their AHL affiliate.

The Abbotsford Canucks are on fire and recently won their ninth game in a row. The last game they lost was on March 7, over three weeks ago.

The late-season push has the Canucks in third place in the Pacific Division with nine games left on their schedule. The top seven teams from the Pacific Division will make the postseason, so the Canucks are sitting in a good spot.

If the Canucks can finish top in the division — they currently trail the first-place Colorado Eagles by seven points with a game in hand — they’ll get a first-round bye in the postseason. If they finish in the top four, they’ll get home-ice advantage for their first series.

Abbotsford has been on this hot streak despite several key players being called up to the big team. Top scorers Aatu Räty, Linus Karlsson, Jonathan Lekkerimäki, and others have been playing in the NHL, making this AHL win streak even more impressive.

Veterans like Sammy Blais and Jujhar Khaira have stepped up in recent weeks. In addition, prospects like Arshdeep Bains, Danila Klimovich, and Kirill Kudryavtsev have also been chipping in with some big performances.

Head coach Manny Malhotra deserves a lot of credit for not only his team’s impressive record but also how well the Abbotsford players have performed when called upon in the NHL, both recently and over the course of the entire season.

This is Malhotra’s first job as a head coach in the professional ranks, and he’s been doing very well thus far. If he continues on this trajectory, he’ll surely be one of the brightest up-and-coming coaches over the next few years.

The AHL regular season runs through April 20, after which the playoffs will begin. If they keep their place in the standings, Abbotsford will host that first-round series, ensuring Canucks fans in the Lower Mainland get some playoff action.
