Vancouver residents lament permanent closure of popular 7-Eleven location

Some Vancouver residents are sharing their sad feelings about a popular 7-Eleven location permanently closing.

The 7-Eleven location across the street from Kensington Park at 33rd Avenue and Knight Street closed earlier this week.

Thankfully, there are still a couple of locations that aren’t too far from the 33rd Avenue one, but it could signal the start of a trend for the once mighty convenience store chain.

We learned in 2024 that 7-Eleven had plans to shutter over 400 locations across North America; however, we couldn’t get confirmation on how many Canadian or Vancouver stores would be impacted by the decision to scale down. Earlier this year, some reports suggested that the chain plans on closing even more stores.

Along with closing some locations, the brand will focus on opening larger and more ‘food-focused’ spots to cut costs and improve margins.

Several other locations across Metro Vancouver closed over the past two years, including one on Canada Way near Edmonds and another on Rumble Street.

Someone on the Vancouver subreddit shared some pictures of the newly closed location, and signs advising customers on which locations they can visit.

“I have been going to this location since around 1990,” the original poster said.

Someone responded, “damn that’s a real piece of vancouver history gone there.”

Someone else referred to this location as a “community staple.”

“Best times were hanging out at Kensington park in the summer then running down the hills to the 7-11 for a slurpee,” another Redditor remembered.

The two closest locations to the now closed spot include the 7-Eleven on Knight and 57th Avenue, and the one on Victoria Drive and 53rd Avenue.

Some viral products from 7-Eleven were recently listed as part of a recall due to Listeria risk.
