We made it, everybody. We made it to 2016. What a bright and amazing future it is! Strap on your moon boots, hop in your flying car, and hit up a couple of the futuristic events happening in New Vancouver.

The Vancouver Events Calendar has more.

Polar Bear Swim

  • What: The worst part about waking up on New Year’s Day is that you aren’t completely submerged in ice cold water. Fix that right quick with the Vancouver Polar Bear Swim. Jump into English Bay on this bright winter morning with hundreds of like-minded Vancouverites. What have you got to lose, but every shred of heat in your body?
  • Where: English Bay Bathhouse – Burnaby Street and Beach Avenue, Vancouver
  • When: Friday, January 1; Registration at 12:30 p.m. / Swim at 2:30 p.m.

Salute to Vienna

  • What: Languish in the timeless beauty of Vienna’s musical genius, with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Mozart, Strauss, and more – Vienna had a lot of classical composers, and you’ll fall in love with them all over again.
  • Where: The Orpheum – 601 Smithe Street, Vancouver
  • When: Friday, January 1; 2:30 p.m.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Anaheim Ducks

  • What: Ring in the new year with a hockey game featuring team names that totally rhyme. Even if they didn’t rhyme, this would probably be a great game. Support that sweet local competitive spirit.
  • Where: Rogers Arena – 800 Griffiths Way, Vancouver
  • When: Friday, January 1; 7 p.m.

What So Not at Celebrities

  • What: The newest musical project from Australian producer Emoh Instead, What So Not hits Celebrities in Vancouver tonight. Making a name for himself as a top notch presenter of preternaturally peppy beats, What So Not is your go-to show tonight for EDM excitement.
  • Where: Celebrities Nightclub – 1022 Davie Street, Vancouver
  • When: Friday, January 1; 7 p.m.

The Big Lebowski

  • What: When it comes to movies with almost inexplicable fanbases, The Big Lebowski is right up there near the top. A film from the legendary Coen Brothers about Jeff Bridges in a housecoat drinking vodka and milk at the same time, The Big Lebowski has endured, and will endure for generations to come. Check it out at the Rio tonight! Get in on the insanity!
  • Where: The Rio Theatre – 1660 East Broadway, Vancouver
  • When: Friday, January 1; 4 p.m.
