Burnaby's first housing building for the homeless reaches completion

A temporary modular housing project recently completed near Burnaby Lake Sports Complex West is the first housing development for the homeless constructed within Burnaby.

The three-storey modular building located at 3986 Norland Avenue contains 52 single-occupancy units that each contain a private washroom and kitchenette.

Like other modular housing projects, this building in Burnaby also has common amenity spaces, such as a commercial kitchen, dining lounge area, and laundry facilities. The building and its support, meal, and skills training programs are operated by Progressive Housing Society.

“Norland is a step toward achieving the supply of safe and affordable housing people need,” said Mike Hurley, mayor of Burnaby, in a statement. “For individuals, it is a chance to build a healthier and more stable life. For the community, it is a signal that the City of Burnaby is committed to public safety and ensuring there is a place here for everyone.”

To achieve the project, the municipal government provided a $250,000 grant and leased the city-owned land to BC Housing at a nominal rate.

The provincial government provided $10.1 million to cover construction and annual operating costs. Residents will be charged a monthly rate of $375, which is the social assistance shelter allowance.

Last month, the city announced a potential partnership with BC Housing to build 1,300 units of social housing across seven sites over the short-to-medium term.
