A 21-storey, 171-unit West End tower is being opposed by neighbours in the area, citing concerns over density, blocking the view and changing the character of the neighbourhood.
The group West End Neighbours does not take an official stance on the issue, but says others have opposed it since 2008 when it was set to be only 19 storeys high.
Now it’s bulkier and denser than before, and people fear their neighbourhood’s culture will disappear.
“What it’s going to take is all of us together, all of us together, letting [then mayor] Sam Sullivan and the NPA know that we’re not going any further down the road that they’ve been going and that developers are not going to make the West End into another Yaletown,” Councillor Tim Stevenson said back in 2008 during the initial proposals.
Included in the proposal is a change to density bylaws to allow more units to be built. The 171 apartments will all be rentals and will include a mix of studios, one, two and three bedroom units. It will replace a three storey walk-up.
“The West End is very densely populated. In fact, a lot of the amenities like the community centre are very heavily used already,” director of West End Neighbours, Randy Helten, told News1130.
A public hearing on the tower is scheduled for today at 6 p.m.
