
A hike in the Lions Bay area near Squamish ended in tragedy after a 16-year-old hiker died after taking a fall.
According to a news release, Sea to Sky RCMP-Squamish received a report on Sunday, just after 3:30 p.m., of two hikers who had been separated and were lost in the Lions Bay area.
One of the hikers had reportedly fallen down a gully, while the other had left the trail to try to find their friend.
One of the hikers was successfully located and extracted by North Shore Search and Rescue.
The second hiker who fell was located unresponsive and was taken to the hospital.
“Despite life-saving efforts, the 16-year-old youth did not survive,” stated an RCMP news release.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased,” stated Sgt. Dallas Langley of the Sea to Sky RCMP-Squamish.
RCMP is working with the BC Coroners’ Office to advance the investigation.
