1245 Harwood Street vs West End Residents

The House, the tree and the highrise. That pretty much sums up the battle that is looming over 1241-1245 Harwood Street in the West End.

It seems West End residents are at it again trying to persuade city council to ban yet another development. I find this funny that people in the West End, who live in the 2nd most dense neighbourhood in North America, are against development.

At the centre of this controversy is the oldest tulip tree in Western Canada. The tree may or may not be a pawn in this chess match with the city. However, what can’t be argued is that the development is great and the future of the West End means more development.  Yes, the community needs a plan, however, development can’t be completely halted either.

I’m in support of the project . Great building and preservation of the Legge residence.

This coming Tuesday, May 31st at 2 pm, Council will be deciding on whether to approve a design proposal for 1245 Harwood Street. This proposal will see the development of a Bing Thom designed tower and the preservation of the Legge residence. The Legge residence is one of the very few remaining examples of the estate houses that used to populate the West End in the first half of the last century. This is an extraordinary opportunity for the city to get a building designed by an internationally renown architect (who was just awarded the RAIC Gold Medal – the top award that can be given to an architect in Canada) plus preserve this piece of our history.
