Hundreds of piggy banks full of cash up to $1,000 will be given away between 7 and 9 a.m. Thursday morning, but before the event even started there were already around 1,000 people in line.
We reported Wednesday an anonymous group, now known to be Coast Capital Savings, would be giving away 300 piggy banks full of cash at the corner of Thurlow and Georgia Thursday morning. The campaign, called #VancouverGetsIt, demonstrates how much money Vancouverites are spending on housing, and they have constructed a house made of piggy banks. All those in the long line will receive a bank until all 300 are gone.
“It might be $5 for their morning coffee, but it could be $100, $200 or even $1,000,” the event organizer said.
As of 7 a.m. Thursday, the line up stretched from Thurlow to Burrard on Georgia Street and down Burrard toward the Hyatt Regency, and from Thurlow down to Melville St. Over 1,000 people appear to be lined up for the free cash.
Murmurs among the crowd mentioned that people began queuing up last night around midnight, hoping to win big. But there’s always the chance they will come away with only a couple dollars.
Needless to say, if you’re not already in line, you should probably just buck up for your own coffee this morning. Coast Capital began handing out tickets soon after 7 a.m. Anyone without a ticket will not get a piggy bank full of cash.
