It seems as though The Province or Vancouver Sun can run a headline like this one at least once a week. Is Surrey destined to become the Lower Mainland’s ghetto as once prophesied by the all knowing, drinks from a diamond encrusted chalice Urban Dweller. He and his minions are the ones who proclaimed that Surrey will be our regions Oakland or Scarborough.
One can only hope it doesn’t happen, but as gentrification is pushing people east, mixed in with Surrey’s lower housing prices it looks more and more likely that it will become a suburban nightmare and not a dream. Once upon a time people fled the inner city in hope of a brighter future with blades of freshly cut grass. However, the only blades prevalent in the streets of “Slurrey” are knifes and machetes.Dianne Watts is can’t right this ship on her own. Surrey has big dreams of being the second city in the region. Let’s just hope it doesn’t become our Oakland.
