Confirmed: part of Toronto smells like shit today.
Earlier today, besides the crisp fall morning, it seemed many of us were captivated by a scent… of poop.
Residents across the city noticed a foul, pungent smell lingering around Toronto, and took to Twitter to air their grievances about it.
Is it just me, or does Toronto smell like shit today? 🤔

But, as it turns out, there is a reasonable explanation for the arguably complex and unreasonable stench.
Organic manure.
“In the fall, Parks applies organic manure to sport fields as part of the turf maintenance program to promote soil health and strengthen the turf coming out of the summer season. The use of organic fertilizer for turf is a best practice for plant health care in urban greenspace management,” the City’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation told Daily Hive.
“The fertilizer used by the City is derived from composted poultry manure, and has been certified and approved for organic food production. There are no health risks or safety concerns around its use.”
The City says that any smells associated with the fertilizer is temporary, Any odour associated with the fertilizer application is temporary, and will dissipate.
“This work will continue across the city,” the city department said, “and should be completed by the end of the month, weather permitting.”

So, as long as the weather holds up, you should only need to hold your noses until All Hallows’ Eve, Toronto.
