Jamaica-bound flight diverted back to Toronto after "unfounded" coronavirus claim

Passengers bound for Jamaica on Monday were diverted back to Toronto Pearson Airport after a guest on board made “unfounded claims regarding coronavirus.”

According to WestJet, flight 2702 scheduled to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, was diverted back to due to an unruly guest.

WestJet said that there were 243 guests on board the flight, and that law enforcement and EMS personnel were requested to meet the flight upon arrival in Toronto.

“Out of an abundance of caution, our crew followed all protocols for infectious disease on board, including sequestering an individual who made an unfounded claim regarding Coronavirus,” WestJet’s Morgan Bell said in a statement to Daily Hive.

The airline said due to the cancellation, it added an extra segment flight scheduled to depart Toronto on February 4 at 6:45 am.

As of February 3, there were 29 coronavirus cases under investigation in Ontario, with 3 confirmed cases in the province.

The fourth confirmed case in Canada is in BC.
