Masai Ujiri drops emotional tribute video to his time with Toronto Raptors

If there was ever any doubt about how one of the most iconic figures in Toronto Raptors history felt about the city, those thoughts might have been erased on Monday morning.
After appearing on Good Morning America last week in his first public comments since his high-profile exit, former Raptors president Masai Ujiri uploaded an emotional five-minute tribute video to his time in Toronto via his Giants of Africa foundation this morning.
“I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for my family, our incredible players, the dedicated staff, and the Raptor fans. Now, a new chapter begins,” Ujiri said early in the video.
“But your love will always be with me. Basketball brought me here, but beyond this beautiful game, we are always connected. And for that I am so thankful.”
Less than 12 hours after the conclusion of the 2025 NBA Draft, the Raptors parted ways with the longtime executive after 12 years with the franchise.
“Toronto is where our first child was born. It’s the only home all of my children have known. Their friends and community have helped shape them into who they are, and they’ll have a lasting impact on who they will all become,” Ujiri added.
While Ujiri was one of the key architects behind the 2019 NBA title in Toronto, he spoke often about his desire to bring another trophy to the city.
In particular, Ujiri spoke about wanting a do-over celebration for himself, as he was shoved by an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy over an apparent dispute about his credentials while entering Oakland’s Oracle Arena court to celebrate.
Ujiri was even named in a lawsuit about the incident for the apparent harm caused to the officer in a retaliatory shove, though it was later dropped.
“My dreams of a second championship are alive and well, and that pursuit will surely carry on as my next chapter begins,” Ujiri said.
