Toronto ranked one of the best cities in the world for tech jobs
While the global tech sector was slammed by a wave of brutal job cuts last year — including the likes of many Toronto-based startups — the demand for professionals in the city remains high, with some of the biggest names in tech continuing to open massive offices right in the downtown core.
Despite a downturn in the industry earlier this year, Toronto still reigns as one of the best cities in the world for finding a job in the sector and was recently named the third-largest tech hub in North America.
Cloud cost intelligence platform, CloudZero, recently analyzed the top 30 digital cities globally and considered the number of job openings and salaries for five in-demand tech roles, including cloud engineers, software engineers, machine learning engineers, data scientists, and information security analysts.
The platform also factored in the number of tech companies in each city, broadband speed, cost of a central one-bedroom apartment rent, and rent as a percentage of the annual income to identify the best cities for tech careers worldwide.
The study found that Toronto ranks as the 15th best city in the world for finding a career in tech, with the tenth-highest salary at $74,332. Out of all the cities analyzed, Toronto also boasts the sixth-highest amount of tech roles available with 5,963 openings.
Overall, the US dominated the top 15 index ranking for tech job opportunities, with Washington, DC being the world’s best city for tech workers, according to the study.
However, job cuts in the industry have continued this year, with Crunchbase recording some of the highest workforce reductions at Amazon (16,080) and Microsoft (11,158).
“Although tech companies have seen a loss of over 168,885 workers in the US, they aren’t alone in needing highly skilled tech workers,” the study reads.
