Toronto Maple Leafs waive pair of players including Alex Nylander

The Toronto Maple Leafs waived a pair of players on Wednesday afternoon.
Forward Alex Nylander, brother of Leafs star William, and American defenceman Dakota Mermis both hit the waiver wire, as per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
How have the two players been doing for the Leafs?
To put it lightly, the Leafs probably won’t miss either player much if they get claimed, although William Nylander might need to find a new roommate.
Nylander played in five games for the Leafs this season but was unable to locate the scoresheet. In 14 games at the AHL level, he put up eight goals and four assists, totalling 12 points. He was originally signed to an AHL deal prior to the start of the season before the team eventually upgraded it to a two-way contract.
Nylander, the eighth overall pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, has had a tough time sticking around in one spot. Toronto is his fifth NHL organization, having also spent time with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Chicago Blackhawks after leaving Buffalo.
Mermis is a vet of 74 NHL games himself, had yet to suit up for Toronto this season, and had one assist in three games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. Prior to his time in Toronto, the 30-year-old defender had also spent time with the Arizona Coyotes, New Jersey Devils, and Minnesota Wild organizations but had mostly been in the minor leagues, save for a 47-game stint in Minnesota a year ago.
If both players end up clearing waivers, you can expect them to be suiting up for the Marlies once again in the near future.
